This year we celebrated the winter solstice – sacrificing virgin-white marshmallows and discovering the joys of a mug of mulled wine huddled around the fire.
There’s something about a bit of celebration and reflection at this time of year that I find quite reinvigorating:
- The punctuation of the end of another financial year, pausing to reflect on performance, progress and personal satisfaction.
- The embracing of a brand new year, with the opportunity to set one clear priority and to stress test that with the team before committing to it.
- Giving gratitude to those who made it another great year on so many levels.
- Getting excited about those who are leaning in with ideas to make the new one even better.
For many of us, this is the time of year to get some much-needed snow, sun or surf time in. Or throw a Christmas in July party.
Whether you celebrate with friends, get some personal time, or do something completely different, it’s definitely a time for renewal.
In the southern hemisphere especially, I think it’s an even better time for reflection and resolutions than the more traditional New Year’s Eve.
There’s something about the shortest day of the year that gives you a different perspective of what’s to come – longer days, more sunshine, and warmer weather are all their way.
New Year’s Eve doesn’t do the same thing to my brain! Maybe this is why my new resolutions routinely fail. What about you?
When’s your favourite time for reflection and renewal? Financial Year’s End or New Year’s Eve?
