I walk around my neighbourhood every morning, as fast as feet will go (without breaking into a hated jog), with Lilly Allen blasting her London lyrics into my ears to make me laugh. And although I do the same circuit every day, I notice something different each time.
Last week I spotted this sign. On the first day it made me chuckle out loud. On the second, third and fourth day I mulled it over at a different level entirely – and took a lesson from it.
That’s a sign to:
- Take literally – and do what it says (pls add emoji side-eyeballs, it’s a bit racy!)
- Take humorously – a stop sign humorously defaced
- Take cynically – a stop sign illegally defaced
- Take metaphorically – a sign representing other things in your life you should stop
- Take figuratively – a sign to get the good things in your life back on track
Then on the fifth day, the sign had been cleaned, making me think that’s a sign to:
- Take momentarily – it was a sign of something more, but now the moment has passed
- Take pragmatically – sometimes a stop sign is just a stop sign, regardless of anything else
It made me wonder if there are other signs I was missing, or signs I was taking the wrong way, like:
- odd behaviour from a peer
- confronting feedback from my boss
- a lack of feedback from my team
They are all signs after all. If you’re seeing signs, I wonder how you’re reading them – and why you’re reading them that way?
