A few weeks ago I wrote a short post calling *BS* on 2 things – the phrase ‘don’t mix business with pleasure’, and the existence of a ‘Men’s (or women’s) Downhill’ both struck me as outmoded and contrary to how many of us live our life.
I loved the responses it provoked, and in particular this one courtesy of Alasdair Hirst. Beneath this image he wrote “My wife loves these. Outrageous packaging claim. Should be banned. I’m outraged.” and I’ve been pondering that ever since.
I’ll be honest, I feel torn!!
- If they mean this message, I’m outraged too.
- I love that Alasdair is outraged on behalf of women.
- Yet women (including his wife) are big fans and buy it anyway.
So what’s the real deal here?
- Are we being gaslit?
- Are we amused by their cheeky front?
- Are we rebelling against being told what to do?
- Do they truly not want women buying their chocolate?
- Are we worried about the impact to those who might not be as easily amused?
There’s a lot to think about here!
The risk is not that we fail to spot the ambiguity in the packaging. The risk is that we fail to consciously choose our response.
It’s the same in the workplace.
We read different signals in almost everything people say and do. Every sign, every package, every gesture, every email.
Sometimes we need to be clear about how it makes us feel and point it out. Other times we can remain ambiguous about it and say nothing. And other times, we can go ahead and eat the chocolate.
As long as we are making our own conscious choice, have respect for alternative reactions, and receive respect in return for ours, then all is well.
When that’s not the case, then as leaders, we have to step up. Even with a mouthful of chocolate, it’s perfectly acceptable to point out the validity of the alternative, outraged view. Simply by helping others to separate their opinions from their emotions, you’ll make your workplace a more harmonious one.
